Fly Fishing for Tarpon
Rio Lagartos, Yucatan, Mexico
Pesca Mexicana offers hassle free 2 Day / 1 Night Tarpon Fly Fishing adventures in the Rio Lagartos Reserve in Yucatan, Mexico. This will be the easiest, most enjoyable Tarpon Fly Fishing adventure you have ever experienced and transportation is always included.
Rio Lagartos is a small fishing village at the top of the Yucatan Peninsula where the green waters of the Gulf of Mexico meet the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea.
I first fished this area in 2002 and immediately fell in love with the people and the fishing. I live in the Yucatan and have fished from Xcalak to Champoton and for Tarpon. This area is "Numero Uno".
The reserve is a 3.5 hour scenic drive from Tulum or Cancun. I will pick you up at your resort, hotel or Cancun Airport and head to San Felipe. After checking into the hotel and securing your room, you will have time to relax and visit or scout the village.
Breakfast is served at 5:00 and around 5:30, you will join your guide and board your panga.
At the completion of your fishing day, you will return to the hotel, shower and check out. You should be back to your resort, hotel or Cancun Airport between 8:30 and 9:00.
Here is what you get:
- Transportation to Rio Lagartos and back to your resort, hotel or Cancun Airport.

I have observed that other outfitters charge and or more and offer less to much less. Some offer day trips that create a rush...rush...rush experience. Their package makes for a VERY long and hectic day. Our price includes everything they offer plus lodging and meals. We offer a very relaxed and enjoyable trip. Do your research and choose wisely.
You will need to furnish your own 8 or 9 weight fly rod with a full floating tropical line. You must bring polarized sunglasses, a hat and sandals or tennis shoes for added comfort on the panga. I also suggest you bring suntan lotion or spray.
I usually wear long pants and a long sleeve shirt while fishing. I also wear a cap and protection to cover my ears and neck. I use a 9 weight fast action saltwater fly rod and a Rio Tropical Outbound Short integrated shooting head (WF9F) fly line. Whatever line you pick, make sure it is a tropical, full floating line. Reels are important...they must be saltwater rated and have a smooth drag. I use an Abel Super 9 or Tibor Riptide reel. A Tibor Everglades or similar reel will also work nicely. A ton of backing is not important.

Flies: Schiminnows, Gurglers, Zonkers, and Cock Roach patterns in black, tan, dark brown, blue and purple and black and Seaducers in white/red all on 1/0 or 2/0 hooks seem to work great. The flies need to be light in weight and no more than 2.5 inches long.
Most casts will range from 50 to 85 feet. If you cannot cast 85 feet you need to practice before you hit the water.
Hey Tom...we are home now and reviewed the pictures. Just wish to reiterate...a first class fishing trip from the moment we booked with you till you returned us to the resort....just as advertised and promised. San Felipe was a lovely town...we need to do this again. Pedro was patient and very sharp...having us on fish the whole day. You made my holiday...will definitely come back with friends. Thanks again.
Bryce and Linda
What a trip...you did it for me again. This was my 2nd trip with you to San Felipe and it just keeps getting better. I will be back in a few months and we will do it again.
See you soon my friend, Moses
Tommy Boy, such a deal. I had a fantastic time fishing San Felipe, especially since the Tarpon cooperated. Now that the big trip is history I regret putting it off for so long. By the way, the food at that restaurant on the square was excellent. I wish I could get those flavors here in Texas. Tell your wife Thank You for her hospitality and I will be back in 2014...count on it.
Tom, like you told me on the phone, it was the best fishing trip I have ever been on. Everything you told me was exactly the way it was. Jake and I talked on the plane going back to Colorado and we agreed that we were going to do it again, hopefully next year. The beer at Servefrio was the cold, cold, cold and just what we needed at the end of the day. We thought our guide was excellent in spotting tarpon and getting us into position. We are also glad we opted for the top floor with the balcony. What a beautiful way to end a day. All in all a great trip and a bargain at twice the price. Our paths will definitely cross again.
Tom, I was skeptical when we first talked. I have heard way too many bad stories about Mexico and the thought of wandering off to some remote location made me more than a little nervous. Now, as they say in Mexico, No Mas. The trip was as described, right down to the last detail (and I know I asked you a lot of questions). Once Debbie and I roamed around Playa del Carmen she relaxed and told me she would be OK staying alone, especially when you gave her your wife's phone number and email address. I have been on numerous guided trips in the US but, without exception, none has come close to the experience I had in San Felipe. Also, I really enjoyed your company and your knowledge of the area. It made the trip so much more enjoyable. I hope we make it to Mexico again and if I do I will look you up for a repeat performance.
Thanks for everything, Henry
I am sorry it has taken me so long to write but things have been really hectic. Upon return, we discovered our health insurance had been dropped thanks to Obama. Things went downhill from there. But that is in the past so here we go...WOW, WOW, WOW. Tom, I had a great trip. If you remember, it was raining when we turned in but you did not seem concerned. When the sun came up the sky was blue, the water was like glass and there were plenty of Tarpon to shoot at. I had trouble making some of my casts but mainly because I had a bad case of buck fever. I now know the most beautiful sight in the world is a rolling Tarpon. I have talked to some guys at work and hopefully we can work up a group trip for 3 or 4 of us (they loved my pictures). If there are 3 of us, we can put the 2 other guys in a panga and you and I can share a panga. I cannot think of a better way to spend a day. My wife has already agreed so it looks like it could come together. Hope to see you soon and I will stay in touch.
You really are "Tarpon Tom". Absolutely no complaints. Great food, great conversation, mucho tarpon and a great experience. Like your website states...from start to finish, easy and enjoyable. Tom, the lodge was just what I needed and I truly enjoyed spending time with you. I will give you a call in 2014 and we will plan my next tarpon adventure. I want the 4/3 package next time.
