Frequently Asked Questions
about Fly Fishing in the Yucatan

Hola from Tom

We offer exceptional flats fishing for Bonefish, Tarpon, Permit, Cuda and an occasional Snapper on the "gin clear" flats located on the Northwest end of Cozumel. Please look at the Gallery Pictures to help you get a feel for where you will be fishing in relation to the Island of Cozumel. The sand is white, the water is shallow and clear and the fish are plentiful. I was once told that Bonefish only live in the prettiest water in the world and that is surely why you find so many roaming Cozumel's north flats.

Your humble hosts Tom Martin and Tuza Medina will assure your Yucatan fishing adventure will provide memories that will last a lifetime. When you think of fishing Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, think of www.pescamexicana.com, you won't be disappointed

1. How do I get there?
Most people fly into Cozumel or Cancun. You can also reach Cozumel by Cruise Ship. If you fly into Cancun, you reach Cozumel by passenger ferry from Playa del Carmen, about 30 miles south of Cancun.

2. Do I need a Mexican Fishing License?
Yes. A Mexican Fishing License is now required and is presently $10.00 USD per day or $45.00 USD a week per angler. Our guides will take care of all necessary fishing license requirements on the morning of your booking.

3. Can I bring my own fishing tackle?
We always recommend you bring your own tackle but, in the event that is not possible, we will furnish the rod and reel (please tell us in advance). We furnish tackle for fly fishing as well as spin fishing.

Fly Rod and Reel: Cozumel's wind is not your friend so bring a capable 8 or 9 weight saltwater rod with a quality saltwater reel that has a smooth drag and holds 200+ yards of backing along with weight forward floating line.

Spinning Rod and Reel: A medium action 6' to 7' rod, a reel with a good drag that holds 150-200 yards of 8# to 12# test line, size 4-8 hooks, spoons, top water poppers and split shot.

Leader & Tippet: A 100 yard spool of Trilene, Stren or similar 10# to 12# mono works great and will fit neatly in your pocket (some anglers like 8# mono).

Flies: I recommend you contact Hills Discount Flies and purchase Bonefish Critters size 6 and an assortment of Charlies and Gotchas in pink, tan and pearl size 8. Jim Hill sells quality flies at very reasonable prices. His store is located in the Yakima, WA area and if you call Jim @ 1-800-337-4483 you will have your flies in 2 days. I have found Jim Hill to be an extremely nice person to deal with. While on his website, why not look at the rest of his fly selection.

4. What do I need to bring?
Foot Protection: Any type of hard-bottom flats boot, marl walkers or old tennis shoes will work but you definitely need protection from small slivers of coral.
Clothing: A breathable shirt and shorts or pants, hat, and possibly rain gear will help make the day more enjoyable.
Skin Protection: You will absolutely need sun screen SPF 30, lip balm and probably a small container of bug spray.
The Rest: Polarized sun glasses (gotta have em), a tie-fast knot tool, clippers, pliers and camera are always good to have.

5. What do you provide?

1. The boat (panga with lifejackets), you have got to have a panga to get to the fish.

2. A professional English speaking guide with good eyes and a ton of desire.

3. Flats or mangrove fishing opportunities that best fit the way you like to fish.

4. Water, soft drinks, snacks, beer and spin cast bait. I strongly recommend you leave the beer for the boat trip back to the landing. The Cozumel sun is Muy Caliente and does not mix well with beer. Drinking beer during the day will make you tired and shorten your fishing trip and, after all, you are paying to fish.

5. We can furnish Fly or Spinning gear if needed but please let us know in advance (We charge for lost flies and lures).

6. We like to start early (6:00 AM). If that does not fit your schedule, let us know and we will adjust our schedule to meet your schedule.

6. What are your rates?
We charge a reasonable $375.00 USD + License(s) for 2 anglers and a FULL DAY OF FISHING. A 3rd angler can be added for an additional $75.00 USD + License. Sorry, we do not accept personal checks, travelers checks or Credit Cards for payment…its Mexico, cash only please ( expect exchange conversion for payment in Peso's).

7. What about gratuities?
If you enjoy the fishing, please tip the guide accordingly. If your experience was not to your satisfaction, please let me know immediately…I want every client to catch fish and have fun and cannot correct problems unless I know about them.

8. Where will we meet?
In Cozumel, we will meet you at Palmeras Restaurant across from the ferry landing at 6:00 AM and weather permitting, will fish until 3:00 PM. Most of Cozumel's flats fishing guides promise a full day of fishing but have you back to the landing by 2:00 PM.

If you are not staying on Cozumel, the ferry schedule from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel is displayed below. You need to be on the 6:00 AM ferry from Playa.

Tom, thanks for a great fishing trip. Alfredo did an excellent job. I will definitely be back, I figure Alfredo owes me a lunch! I'll forward a couple of pictures as soon as I get them from Jennie. Thanks for the dinner, it was very enjoyable meeting you and wife and look forward to keeping in contact.
