All flats fishing currently takes place on Cozumel's
northeast flats. Unlike estuary fishing north of Cancun where the lagoons are
muddy and most fishing is from a boat, Cozumel flats fishing is like Ascension
Bay, only easily accessible. Five large lagoons offer shallow, ankle to knee
deep clear water flats over a floor of light sand. While the Bonefish is our
primary target, Cozumel's lagoons also hold Permit, Tarpon, Snook and Mangrove
Snapper.
We normally fish areas that other guides avoid, not because
the fishing is bad, but because they do not want to burn the fuel required to
take you there. We absolutely do not agree with that thought process. When you
leave Marina Puerto de Abrigo, you will travel approximately 40 minutes by boat
to reach our fishing grounds and we know those grounds well. Normally, you will
not see any other boats in the area, and if you do, it is probably one of
ours.
Pesca Mexicana does not use fishing brokers, travel agents
or mailers to operate our business. Our ONLY advertising is our website, a few
select Orvis stores and a lot of satisfied customers. Our level of repeat
business would make any company, large or small, envious.
Even though I live on the mainland, I
am available by phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and I am always happy to
assist you with any logistics problems you might experience.
Before you go to our next page, let's quickly discuss safety
and security. I want my comments to be straight forward and clear:
Quit watching the negative press on television and taking
"for fact" what you read in the newspaper. The Riviera Maya is safe, probably
much safer than where you live. There is not a single second of any day that my
wife or I consider our safety to be an issue. We started visiting this area in
1997 and have lived here full time since 2005. This is our home, our work and
our life with no regrets or concerns. When you get to the Riviera Maya, relax
and enjoy the ride.
"Hey Tom, hope things are going
your way. Alfredo was great. We had two fantastic days on the water with him.
When Carrie and I left Cozumel, we headed for Tulum. We fished one day with
another outfitter in the Ascension Bay / Boca Paila area and now we know why
you are fishing only Cozumel at this time. First, the guide was not the quality
of Alfredo. Second, the manager had an attitude. Third, the fishing was not
near as good as Cozumel. We had planned to fish two days there but one was more
than enough. I know you told me, but you were a gentleman and did not elaborate
and I had to find out for myself. I will be back with Carrie's brother in
October like you suggested and want to stay with Alfredo." See you soon!

"Had a great time fishing with Ivan
and Tuza. On our way out we found a little hole and a school of about 8 to 10
fish. I cast a shrimp up in front.. and Wohoo! Attached is a picture of my
first Tarpon. It was a great time, my wife and I will remember it until next
year. I think the best part of the whole trip was the ride in Tuza's VW. Man we
got a chuckle out of it and the ride to the north end of the Island. Anyway
enclosed is a couple pic's and my heart felt Thanks! Nick" |
